From Side Hustle To Full Time Entrepreneur

If you’ve been in the entrepreneur game for a few minutes, it’s easy to forget why you’re here and why you started this whole thing in the first place.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the MRR, profit margins, income stacking and sales-centric side of the business that you can lose touch with your why

Truthfully, that was starting to happen to me and I had to take a beat to sit down and reflect on what led me here in the first place. Why I actually started this business beyond the promises of “scaling to 6-figures” and the yellow brick road lined with dollar bills along the way.

Aaaaand I’m ripping a page out of that diary entry to share it with you. Use this as inspiration to remember your why and use that to fuel your fire in your endless pursuit of building something you’re damn proud of every single day.

Why copywriting?

My background is in journalism, english & marketing. Fresh out of college as a petrified 22 year-old, I knew I wasn’t going to move to LA by myself without a dime to my name and I realllly didn’t want to commute into NYC from my NJ suburb.

Neither option felt right. I applied to plenty of writing jobs and didn’t get any bites. I felt completely lost… until I decided to go back to school to become a teacher. Finally, it felt like I had found purpose

I could change the world one kid and one book at a time.

So at 26, I started teaching middle school English at an urban Title 1 school and fell head over heels in love.

Before long, I was hearing whispers of teachers having side hustles. The more I started to ask around, the more I realized this was super common. And a lightbulb went off over my head.

I realized I could finally combine my passion for writing with my marketing background and become a copywriter working for myself.

I also thought it would be cool to have a reason not to return to school after an eventual maternity leave. (Still childfree living a DINKWAD kind of life and not mad at it).

Before my brain could process what was happening, my business blew up and I matched my teaching salary within 6-months.😱

That’s when shit got real.

The first 3 months that doors were open, I justified my work by telling myself,

“All teachers have a side hustle…and this is yours.” I consistently tried to minimize the impact I was making. I tried to make my business seem like it was no big deal…

When it was in fact a big freakin deal.

Sales started to roll in. People began to know my name. Clients loved & respected the work I did…and demand was skyrocketing.🚀

I loved teaching…but I knew with 100% certainty that this business would be my ticket out of the classroom. It would be my ticket to making the kind of money I really wanted, giving me time freedom and the ability to be my own boss, eliminating all workspace politics FOREVER.

A literal dream come true.

At the end of my first calendar year in business, I received my last payment for the year…and it pushed me over $20,000 in just 7 months of business

THIS WASN’T A CASUAL SIDE HUSTLE ANYMORE.

When I saw the payment come in, I sobbed on my kitchen floor because I never believed this was remotely possible for me.

Entrepreneurship gave me the permission slip I so desperately needed to dream bigger, push my upper limit and become the leader I wished I had.

If you were to ask me now if I would change anything

The answer would be a resounding NO.

It is my pleasure to continue my passion for education inside the walls of the business I built.

It is my pleasure to continue writing copy for women-owned businesses who are here to change the world, one client at a time.

It is my joy to create standards for myself, take time off when I feel like it and actually live my life outside of work again. 👏

If you’re on the fence about starting a business…

Or feeling frustrated when you pitch to the void…

Or wondering if it gets easier
